DHH Business Spotlight: Hear Glam Founder, Maia

“…one morning I woke up and noticed my ears were ringing, and not like a little bit, it was intense,  all I could hear.”

My name is Maia Moscoe, I’m 25 and I wear hearing aids because of Hearing Loss and Chronic Tinnitus. I have had hearing loss since birth but only knew about it when I turned 18 due to tinnitus. My business’s name is Hear Glam and I made earrings that compliment hearing aids by adding a chain to keep them close at all times but still look stylish doing so!

In my downtime, I'm either drumming, scrolling on TikTok or painting. But I’d have to say watching TV with my boyfriend while we have dinner has to be my favourite. I'd also say you'd find me sleeping a bit more than the average person but my little black cat, Lilah is always hanging by.

I developed depression at 18 and started taking antidepressants and one morning I woke up and noticed my ears were ringing, and not like a little bit, it was intense,  all I could hear.  This led me to the ENT and after taking a hearing test it came out that I was in fact hard of hearing. Later I found out I developed hearing loss from medication as an infant and went under the rug for years. My audiologist thought of hearing aids/ tinnitus dampeners to help with the adjustment of navigating life with tinnitus and hearing loss. Since then, I’ve been trying countless medications, doctors and therapy to help with my tinnitus, but regardless of what I do, it’s always there. I have gotten slightly used to it since it started but it’s so inconsistent that I’m different too from day to day.

I went to post secondary school for one semester but stopped when my depression began. I felt it was going to hinder my mental health even more and decided to stop and focus more on my health. I always felt like I wasn’t meant for school, I had many learning issues growing up (not knowing I was hard of hearing didn’t help) so I chose a different path and made something that I could be proud of without having it have a negative effect on my health.

About a year ago I was searching for a way to dress up my hearing aids, make them part of my outfit. I also was concerned about losing these devices that were so crucial, but so tiny. I did research and realized there was a way to connect a chain to the back of an earring and up at the top of BTE hearing aids. It is just me behind Hear Glam but I have the best support system where my friends and family all chip in their different strengths to help me succeed.

My target audience is mainly deaf and hard of hearing women who want to make sure they not only don’t lose their devices but look their best doing so. I personally hate those necklaces that keep your hearing aids close by, it kills my outfit and makes me feel like an old lady. I wanted women to be able to dress their hearing aids to outfit making it the best accessory they have.

There’s many more sets to come, I’m only getting started. There’s going to be sales, giveaways and more!

I’m @HearGlam on instagram, tiktok and you can get your very own on my Etsy store

My boyfriend actually was the one who came up with the name “Hear Glam” after I told him my plan and he helped me to properly start the business.

When it comes to goals, I really just want to see people wearing my products. I don’t want anyone to hide their hearing aids or anything “extra” they need to live their lives. There shouldn’t be only one option for anything and I want to make sure people can choose exactly how they want to style it. A healthy life and business is what I strive for.

I just wanted to give anyone who even likes a post of mine a big thank you, those little notifications give me a rush of serotonin that feels like I can do anything.
